Mining in Society Merit Badge
Mining in Society is a Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) merit badge that explores the history of mining, its role in modern society and the 21st-century economy, safety and environmental considerations, and related careers. It emphasizes how mining supplies essential minerals and materials for everyday products (e.g., smartphones, construction materials, food production aids) while addressing responsible practices, reclamation, and sustainability. The badge was developed with input from organizations such as the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) and the Minerals Education Coalition.
