Unleash Your Leadership Potential!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is Scouting's premier youth leadership course, designed to develop confident, capable leaders who will strengthen their troops, crews, and ships. Conducted in a youth-led model troop, participants learn by doing—leading teams, solving problems, serving others, and building lasting friendships with Scouts from across the council.

NYLT is more than a week of training. It is an investment in a Scout's future. Graduates return to their home units prepared to inspire others, teach leadership skills, and help build stronger youth-led programs. More importantly, they leave with communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and servant leadership skills that extend far beyond Scouting—skills that will serve them in school, college, their careers, and throughout their lives.

To ensure participants are ready to get the most from the course, Scouts must:
  • Be recommended by their Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Skipper. (attach link for Scoutmaster recommendation form)
  • Be at least 13 years old and within the maximum age requirements for their registered Scouting program (Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scouts).
  • Have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for their program (ILST, ILSC, or ILSS).
  • Be comfortable with fundamental outdoor Scouting skills, including camping, camp cooking, basic first aid, flag etiquette, and pioneering (knots and lashings), with minimal supervision.
  • Submit a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve their place.

I want to Serve as NYLT Staff

You've experienced the impact of National Youth Leadership Training. Now it's your opportunity to inspire the next generation of Scout leaders.
Serving on a NYLT staff is one of the most rewarding leadership experiences in Scouting. As part of a youth-led staff, you'll teach leadership concepts, mentor participants, strengthen your communication and teamwork skills, and work alongside an outstanding group of youth and adult leaders. The lessons you'll gain as a staff member will benefit you long after the course ends—in school, your career and throughout your life.
If you're ready to take the next step in your leadership journey, we encourage you to apply.

  • Successfully complete NYLT as a participant.
  • Be an active, registered member of a unit (troop, crew or ship).
  • Have taught a portion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for your unit or district.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching Scout skills with minimal supervision.
  • Submit a résumé highlighting Scouting and other leadership experiences (school, athletics, clubs, faith organizations, employment, etc.) to the Course Director.
  • Complete all required BSA and NYLT staff training prior to the course. Most required training is completed online at your convenience.
