Health Lodge Officer
Essential Functions: This is a volunteer position for a short-term camp and a paid position for a long-term in the summer for summer camp. The Health Lodge Officer will report to the Camp Director of the event. The Health Lodge Officer must be 21 or older and must have one of the following current certifications or licenses and experience to serve as the Health Lodge Officer during various BSA events at Knox Scout Reservation:
- Wilderness First Aid Training
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Paramedic
- Registered Nurse (ADN or higher degree)
- Medical Doctor
Skills required:
- Strong written and communication skills.
- Be able to act quickly in emergencies.
- Be physically mobile if emergency first aid is required.
- Previous pre-hospital or emergency experience is preferable.
Principle Responsibilities:
- Oversee the provided health care at Camp, ensuring it meets the individual needs of Camp Staff and campers.
- Be particularly alert to conditions that affect health, safety, sanitation, and good housekeeping practices.
- Work in conjunction with the Council Physician, local emergency services, and local hospital.
- Ensure Camp Staff orientation session is delivered on medical services. Train Camp Staff about their role related to health care and first aid.
- Organize and maintain a daily sick call and first aid treatment center at each Camp.
- Oversee daily health logs of all occurrences involving the first aid center, ensuring
accurate reporting and correct handling of each situation.
- Oversee first aid procedures and supplies.
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits and emergency procedures throughout camp and ensure supplies stay well stocked throughout the summer camping season.
- If time and knowledge permit, assist in instructing campers in first aid merit badge.
- Participate in camp-wide activities, as needed.
- Assist in the set-up and takedown of all Health Lodge. (As directed.)
The Health Lodge Officer will receive training and mentoring at Knox Scout Reservation. Lodging will be provided inside the Health Lodge during the events. Knox Scout reservation is located in Lincolnton County in Lincolnton, GA. The Health Lodge Officer will be responsible for providing first aid treatment for children, adolescents, and adults during camp. If a medical emergency should occur, Lincoln County emergency services will respond.
