Scouts Serve Soldiers

Members of BSA Troop 8 of the Georgia Carolina Council helped serve Thanksgiving dinner to Sailors about to deploy from Camp McCrady, Ft Jackson Columbia Sunday November 21st

The Scouts joined forces with Troop 111 of the Indian Waters Council to help serve over 400 members of Task Force Marshall the Thanksgiving dinner many would be missing as they deployed to hazardous duty stations around the globe.

This is the second year that Troops 8 and 111 have helped with the dinner, other volunteer groups included the USO, Marine Corp League, American Legion, and Retired Major General Goldsmith.

They even meet a fellow Augustan, Lt Thomas from Hephzibah, who was excited to see Augusta represented at the event. Lt Thomas took the time to shake the hand and thank each scout for coming out to support the sailers.

“It was fabulous seeing the faces of the soldiers as they came in” said Committee chair Dan MacEachern “they kept thanking me and I had to tell them no, thank you from all of us”

“I appreciate what they do for all of us” said Life scout Thomas Williamson, who was also served last year, “plus its a lot of fun”

“It was a great experience to fill them with joy before they deploy away from their families” said Life Scout and Sr Patrol Leader Alex Besel.

Life Scout Thomas Williamson was most impressed that these sailors volunteered for this duty that may take them into harms way.

Troop 111 Scoutmaster Jeff Stokes was approached and told “it was a great thing to have those boys present” from a Eagle Scout in the Navy. Another Eagle scout told him that his Eagle award “opened a lot of opportunities for him in the service”

Task Force Marshall is based out of Camp McCrady, Ft Jackson Columbia SC, its mission is to prepare navy personnel for the rigors of forward operations. Naval personnel assist in logistical operations freeing up Army personnel for other missions. The three week training includes marksmanship, ambush training and how to work with forward deployed units.

Troop 8 is chartered to St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church in Augusta, GA.
